OUR SERVICES

Private Trauma Therapy in Glasgow and Ayr

If you have experienced a traumatic event and/or are struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), you don’t need to face it alone. Our trauma-informed therapy service is a safe and supportive environment in which to process trauma with a compassionate clinician.

Sometimes it may be hard to know how trauma has affected you, especially if the nature of the event causes you to dissociate (emotionally disconnect) from what has happened. In-person talking therapy appointments can help you to express emotions so that you can move past trauma into a positive future.

What is Trauma Therapy for Mental Health?

70% of people experience trauma at some time in their lives, according to the National Library of Medicine. This trauma can derive from experiences of abuse, injury, or sexual violence, but it may also arise from less obvious experiences such as emotional neglect, bullying, chronic stress, discrimination, grief, difficult relationships, or ongoing exposure to instability. Trauma can occur either as one-off incidents or via repeated exposure to challenging experiences.

Trauma-informed therapeutic modalities can help you process difficult emotions to break difficult patterns of the emotional trauma cycle. This may involve approaches such as exposure therapy, somatic techniques, and other evidence-based interventions. Therapy can help you process past trauma as well as provide the opportunity to learn healthy coping strategies for the present day.

Types of Trauma-informed Therapy

  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy: Evidence-based therapy that uses bilateral stimulation to process and integrate distressing memories in a safe space.
  • Trauma-informed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT):
A therapeutic model that helps you understand trauma-related thought patterns and find healthy ways to cope and process emotional responses.
  • Trauma-informed Compassion Focussed Therapy (T-CFT):
A therapeutic approach that supports you to understand the impact of trauma, reduce shame and self-criticism, and build self-compassion, emotional resilience, and a greater sense of safety.

Process

Our Process of Therapy for Trauma

01.

A Warm Welcome

When you come through the doors of one of our clinics in Ayr or Glasgow, you will be greeted by a friendly face, usually a member of our administration team. You will then meet one of our qualified clinicians with experience in carrying out mental health treatment plans. After introductions, you will be taken to a private and comfortable room to begin your assessment.

Initial Assessment

The initial 90-minute assessment is an opportunity to tell your story and talk about ways you feel that trauma symptoms (for example, anxiety or sleep disturbances) are impacting your everyday life. We will explore therapies available and discuss together the treatments that may be beneficial for you moving forward.

Feedback and Recommendations

Based on the initial appointment, we will clearly outline our recommendations and suggestions for the kind of trauma therapy that is likely to help you, and, through a collaborative approach, make a plan for ongoing support. Some of our clinicians offer an eclectic approach, which combines different evidence-based therapies.

Routine Reviews

Reviews are held at set periods to assess how well your chosen therapy is working. Our clinicians will adapt your treatment as needed to help support your progress, working alongside community mental health teams if appropriate. Therapy can be short-term or long-term and is available in person at our mental health clinics in Greater Glasgow, Glasgow city centre, and Ayr.

Do I need to experience PTSD to be eligible for trauma therapy?
