Private EMDR Therapy in Glasgow and Ayr

For many people who have experienced trauma, distressing memories can continue to feel overwhelming long after the event has passed. In eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing therapy (EMDR), you can process difficult memories in a safe environment and, in time, move towards a place of peace.

If past traumatic experiences are continuing to cause you emotional pain and having an impact on your daily life, our compassionate EMDR therapists are here for you.

What Is Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy?

Dr Francine Shapiro developed eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing therapy in 1987. EMDR is an evidence-based therapy that helps the brain process traumatic memories in a safe, structured, and supportive environment. EMDR works by using bilateral stimulation, usually through eye movements or tapping, while the individual visualises a difficult emotion or memory.

Over time, these memories often become less distressing, allowing you to move forward with greater confidence, resilience, and emotional wellbeing. While it is not a traditional talking therapy, it has a comprehensive evidence base for efficacy and is recommended for complex trauma by NHS Scotland.

What We Will Cover in Your EMDR Therapy Session

Traumatic events can sometimes overwhelm the brain’s natural ability to process what has happened, particularly when they occur during childhood, involve repeated adversity, or happen in situations where there is little opportunity to feel safe or seek support. For example, a soldier in a war zone who experiences post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be unable to process what happened at the time.

When traumatic memories remain unprocessed, they can make individuals feel “stuck”, either becoming emotionally numb or experiencing intrusive thoughts, anxiety, and distress. This can have a ripple effect on mental wellbeing, resulting in depression, relationship challenges, or unhelpful patterns of thinking.

EMDR therapy provides a safe, structured, and supportive environment to help you process these experiences at a pace that feels manageable. As therapy progresses, many people find that traumatic memories become less emotionally overwhelming, allowing them to move forward with greater confidence, resilience, and emotional wellbeing.

An EMDR session may cover:

  • Developing coping and emotional regulation strategies to help you feel safe and grounded.
  • Identifying and understanding physical sensations associated with stress or trauma.
  • Using body scanning techniques to increase awareness of how trauma may be held in the body.
  • Processing traumatic or distressing memories in a structured and supportive way.
  • Exploring current symptoms, triggers, and how they affect your daily life.

Our EMDR Therapy Process

01.

A Warm Welcome

When you come through the doors of one of our private practices in Glasgow city centre, Greater Glasgow, or Ayr, you will be greeted by a friendly face, usually a member of our administration team. You will then meet one of our qualified EMDR therapists. After introductions, you will be taken to a private and comfortable room to begin your session.

02.

Initial Assessment

The first appointment is a thorough assessment where you can share your story as you feel comfortable. Our clinicians can support you with what the most appropriate therapy is for you, whether EMDR or another modality like cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). This may include conversations about your childhood and any important information that could influence your treatment plan, such as neurodivergence-related accessibility needs, cultural considerations, or other personal preferences.

Feedback and Next Steps

Based on our conversations with you, we will create a treatment plan that allows you to work through particular issues in a way that makes sense for your situation. This includes clear and accessible recommendations tailored to your individual needs, goals, and preferences – for example, building up emotional grounding skills prior to processing distress.
