Private CBT Therapy in Glasgow and Ayr

If you are struggling with your mental health, please know that you are not alone. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based talking therapy that can help reduce negative thought patterns.

Working with a qualified psychologist or cognitive behavioural therapist, you will gain insight into the way you think and behave and find a positive path forward for the future.

What Is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?

CBT focuses on the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours and how they influence each other. By changing even one of these components, it is possible to break negative cycles and reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mental health difficulties.

For instance, if a young man has a stressful situation at work, he might feel anxious in response. He then has the thought, “Alcohol will help me relax.” This is then followed by the behaviour of drinking too much, which has a knock-on effect on his sleep and makes him feel even more anxious the next day. If the cycle goes on too long, mental health conditions can develop.

A qualified CBT therapist can work with you to identify problematic patterns. With compassion, they can help you develop practical strategies for healthier thoughts and behavioural responses to the feelings you have.

What Will We Cover in CBT Sessions?

Our in-person sessions for CBT are an opportunity for you to talk with a compassionate clinician about how you are feeling. You can discuss anything that you are struggling with, including particular situations that exacerbate your mental health. Your clinician will listen to you without judgement and provide professional advice for how to process your challenges and move towards a brighter future.

While CBT is an evidence-based treatment for many common mental health difficulties, it may not be sufficient on its own for more complex or longstanding difficulties, such as the effects of significant trauma. In these situations, specialist approaches such as trauma-focused CBT (TF-CBT), eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR), or other trauma-informed therapies may be recommended, depending on your individual needs and experiences.

CBT can be used to treat:

  • obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • mental health difficulties
  • low self-esteem
  • relationship issues
  • generalised anxiety disorder
  • everyday life challenges
  • addiction behaviours
  • health anxiety
  • social anxiety
  • chronic illness
  • eating disorders

Process

Our Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Process

01.

A Warm Welcome

When you come through the doors of one of our private practices in Glasgow or Ayr, you will be greeted by a friendly face, usually a member of our administration team. You will then meet one of our qualified therapists. After introductions, you will be taken to a private and comfortable room to begin your session.

02.

Initial Assessment

The first appointment is an opportunity to tell your story and discuss any emotional difficulties in a supportive environment. This may include conversations about your childhood and any important information that could influence your treatment plan, such as neurodivergence-related accessibility needs, cultural considerations, or other personal preferences.

03.

Mental Health Feedback

Based on our conversations with you, we will help you identify the patterns that may be contributing to your difficulties and work collaboratively to create a plan for personal growth. This includes clear and accessible recommendations tailored to your individual needs, goals, and preferences – for example, finding ways to strengthen healthier ways of thinking, feeling, and relating to others.

Ongoing Therapy Sessions

Your ongoing CBT sessions are a person-centred therapeutic approach to mental health that is tailored to your individual needs. At The Dawn Practice, you can trust that our clinicians follow professional and ethical guidelines to ensure you receive the highest standard of health and care excellence. Throughout the process, your clinician will support you to understand what you can and cannot control about life, so you can develop healthier responses to difficult situations.

Routine Reviews

Reviews, in session, are held at set periods to assess how well your therapy is working. Our clinicians will adapt your treatment as needed to help support your progress, but you will always remain at the centre of any and all decisions made. Therapy can be short-term or long-term and is available in person at our mental health clinics in Greater Glasgow, Glasgow city centre, and Ayr.

    Frequently Asked
    Questions

Do I need a GP referral to access therapy for CBT?

    Down Chevron Icon

Though we can work alongside GPs for NHS Shared Care Agreement arrangements, no GP referral is required for CBT. You can self-refer or be referred by family members, schools, or other organisations. If you are unsure or simply would like to discuss your options, please get in touch with us.

How is CBT different to CFT?

    Down Chevron Icon

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) focuses on the interaction between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, helping individuals identify and change unhelpful patterns that may be maintaining emotional distress. Compassion-focused therapy (CFT) provides a supportive and nurturing approach that helps individuals develop greater self-compassion, reduce self-criticism, and cultivate a kinder, more understanding inner voice to support emotional wellbeing.

    What is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

    Down Chevron Icon

Mindfulness-based CBT (MBCT) combines traditional CBT techniques with mindfulness practices. Instead of trying to force a change in your thought patterns, you learn to sit with them in a more balanced, non-judgemental way. As part of this process, you may practise stress-reduction techniques like breathwork and meditation to help improve emotional wellbeing and resilience.
